10 Questions to Plan the Future You Want

Purpose

My 20 year old son and I were talking and somehow got on the subject of his future.

It didn’t sound like he'd given much thought about how to accomplish the things he wanted to do in life.

This gave me an idea to help spark his thinking and I created a chart with 10 questions to answer based on:  Today, 1, 5 and 10 years. We both answered these 10 questions about our future.

10 Questions to Plan the Future You Want:

  1. What is your age?
  2. What do you do?
  3. Where do you live?
  4. Who do you live with?
  5. What is your total annual income?
  6. What is your total debt balance?
  7. What is your total savings/ investments?
  8. What is your weight?
  9. What are the top 3 ways you spend your time?
  10. What is your highest education completed?

It only took 10 minutes for us both to answer these questions, but it generated a good conversation. We discussed financial issues such as expected income, student loans and a home mortgage. We talked about future jobs, marriage, and kids. Most importantly, we talked about him leaving my house one day!

In all seriousness, I was so glad I had the opportunity to discuss these things with him before rather than after life hit him. I later repeated this same exercise with my other kids.

It was important in helping my kids form a vision for their life. Things may not work exactly as planned however I feel spending time thinking about your future before it occurs gives a sense of direction and purpose. It also helps in identifying the necessary steps to take in order to achieve the desired future.

It's never too late! Complete this for yourself or go over it with others in your life today!
